"Fiber is my key to the secret spaces in my imagination. Creativity with fibers keeps me seeing the world around me with a bit of rose colored perspective – my favorite way to be.
I was born in a family of everyday unassuming artists. From Alaska homesteading grandparents who had to make things work with what was on hand, to nightly relaxing crochet of my mother, the pen and ink of my aunt, and sewing of all kinds by family I grew up surrounded with art that was not called art – it was just life. I started my own creativity with pigment and pencil and words on the page as a teen.
After discovering I could replicate useful items while making them uniquely my design I moved into cottons. I still find taking fabric and making it into something to keep a human warm in a quilt is amazing. The everyday blanket made special. My first quilt was a monstrosity of 10 feet square and overtook my small living room for several days during its creation. While it is far from perfection it is still warm and colorful and makes me smile each day I use it.
I start with color and form. I love geometry and architecture – fiber allows me to play with both. Though I work quite deliberately, I also rarely know what the end result will be until I get there. The art is as much about the journey as the result.
I strive to make items that draw the eye and encourage internal commentary. The viewer may see luxury, beauty, use, warmth, or conflict. I rarely make things twice, preferring to expand my own creative abilities with each piece. I love working with a variety of fabrics; new, recycled, cotton and synthetics. I also have a special love for the holidays. I make a few hundred ornaments each year out of a unique design and make my own holiday missives. There is something divine about the opportunity to share of our own creation."
Indigo co-chairs the Chewelah Arts Guild annual Quilt Show presented Memorial Day weekend. She is also a member of the local Cabin Fever Quilt Guild of South Steven's County.
Indigo works mainly in fibers with quilts and fabric dimensional arts. She also works with pen and ink and turns her drawn art into paper goods and prints for her own fabric designs.
