QUARTZITE MOUNTAIN MAGIC MURAL

                                                                                                                                                                                             
The Quartzite Mountain Magic Mural was designed and created by Spokane-based Artist, Melissa Cole. The Chewelah Arts Guild brought Melissa Cole to the project and collaborated with the City of Chewelah and Valley School students, Jenkins High School students, and Gess Elementary 2nd graders to bring this community mural to life. Local artists Margo Sety, Nondis Taylor, Marci Bravo, and Gail Churape assisted Melissa Cole painting Chewelah’s Quartzite Mountain, portions of the scenery, plants and animals living in this landscape and eco-system.
This mural project was part of the Arts Guild’s Arts In Schools Program which brings artist instructors into classrooms to enhance student learning. Nearly 180 mosaic pieces are incorporated into the design, most of them created by 134 students. Completed in late spring of 2026, this mural graces the south wall of the Chewelah Civic Center near its entrance.
The Chewelah Arts Guild provided most of the mural funding. The Arts Guild is immensely grateful to the Vinson Fund for its generous donation toward the project. The Arts Guild is also grateful to Chewelah City Council members for voting unanimously in favor of the project, to Mayor Lindsay Baxter and to City Administrator Tonya Wallace for their support and cooperation, and to participating students and their teachers, and for the volunteers who provided 140 hours of service, contributing to the success of this vibrant community art project.
