PechaKucha

You can learn a lot about creativity in six minutes forty seconds. Twenty slides worth, in fact, say organizers of the Chewelah Arts Guild's PechaKucha event. PechaKucha started in Japan as a way for designers to share their work with others. The Chewelah Arts Guild has adopted this speedy presentation format, so that viewers can get a taste of local creatives work.
Each creative person or group shares 20 slides about their art or event in less than seven minutes. Sponsored by Chewelah Arts Guild and the Independent, Bud Evans inspired this presentation style after having attended a PechaKucha event at a dental convention. Evans searched around and found the closest PechaKucha event in Ellensburg, Washington. He wanted to bring the concept to Chewelah. The fast pace allows for interest to build around art while providing exposure to many different creative people in one evening.
PechaKucha is a free event and very popular. The next one will be held at the Quartzite Brewing Co. on September 23, 2020.

 Music on the Mountain

Gonzaga University Symphony Orchestra made its Music on the Mountain debut on May 18, 2019 in a 2:00 p.m. concert presented by Chewelah Arts Guild and Chewelah Peak Learning Center. During this concert classical music lovers enjoyed the same music mastery the event has delivered for 16 years presenting the Spokane Symphony.
“We’re excited to welcome the GU Symphony to Chewelah Peak.  This is an orchestra that attracts some of the world’s top soloists to perform with them, and we know it will be a great afternoon of music-making,” Chewelah Arts Guild President, Dawn McClain said.
The orchestra is a blend of gifted GU music students, Spokane professionals, and Gonzaga alumni.  The conductor is Kevin Hekmatpanah, who doubles as a cellist with the Spokane Symphony. “For the music lover, Spokane holds few pleasures as great or as dependable as the concerts of the GU Symphony Orchestra,” wrote Spokesman-Review music critic Larry Lapidus.  Their performances “leave ‘em in the aisles, begging for more,” he added.
That is exactly what happened and we look forward to presenting Gonazga University Symphony Orchestra again this year. This is an amazing opportunity for an extraordinary musical experience right here in our back yard.
